The Basque Memorial in Town Quay Park commemorates the almost 4,000 Basque children who were evacuated to Southampton in May 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, after the infamous bombing of Guernica by fascist German & Italian planes.
The Memorial was donated by the Basque Government and the interpretation of Picasso’s Dove, in his famous painting “Guernica”, was donated by the sculptor, Anthony Padgett.
It was unveiled in October 2022 by the Spanish Ambassador to the UK, in the presence of a representative of the Basque Government, and the Lord Mayor of Southampton Cllr Jacqui Rayment.
